Seth's September Surprise by Cheryl Farnsworth is a heartwarming and empowering children’s book that celebrates perseverance, friendship, and the joy of discovering unexpected talents. Set in the charming woodland town of Spruce Hollow, this delightful tale follows Seth the raccoon, a soccer enthusiast who’s struggling to keep up with his teammates. Determined to improve, Seth takes a surprising route—summer ballet classes—and finds himself not only enjoying the experience but also becoming stronger and more confident.
When Seth hides his new passion from his best friend Rodney out of fear of being teased, the story gently explores themes of self-acceptance and courage. Rodney’s reaction is a refreshing reminder of what true friendship looks like, and the story's uplifting conclusion promotes inclusivity and open-mindedness.
Perfect for readers ages 5–10, Seth’s September Surprise is a vibrant, feel-good adventure that encourages kids to try new things and embrace who they are. A must-have for every young reader’s shelf.

Seth's September Surprise
This is a cute story about a little fox girl who learns to overcome her fear of speaking in public. Along the way, she and her family and friends enjoy winter and Christmas activities. It is a heartwarming and fun book. The pictures are warm and engaging, I was surprised to see a child in kindergarten writing stories. Also, 7-9 year olds might want to read about someone more their age.

Great children’s book with fun characters and really cool artwork
Mark Farnsworth
Seth's journey in learning to build skills in different areas of his life was remarkable. He was determined to be a good soccer player, because he love the game. He enrolled in ballet not knowing it trajectory, but ended up liking it. Great lesson for kids to try new skills, which can help build existing skills. Recommend for kids.

This is a very cute children’s book about Seth, the raccoon, and his friend Rodney, the squirrel, who are both soccer players on the local school team.
Seth is not one of the best players on the team, but over the summer of vacation, he sees a note posted on a tree for ballet and decides to go watch the ballet, and then he wants to sign up for a class in ballet primarily because he thinks it might help him play soccer better.
It appears that Seth may have been cracked because after a summer of swimming, fishing, celebrating, Fourth of July toasting marshmallows over a campfire, and taking ballet lessons every week at the first game after the start of school, Seth became the hero of the game.
Thanks to the ballet lessons Seth had picked up, he was able to leap over the other players with the soccer ball and score the winning tie-breaking point just as the time was called. The coach recommended that all the other soccer players take ballet as well it seems to work. Seth's parents were very proud of him, and he was very happy. Very cute children’s book. Well illustrated with very unique pictures of all the animal characters in the story.

This story was pretty good overall. At times it felt like it was losing the plot, it was still fun and interesting, but seemed to stray away from the main story a bit. I would probably give it five stars if it cut a little out and stayed on point a bit more.

This was such a sweet and uplifting read! Seth’s September Surprise is one of those stories that sneaks in a powerful life lesson without ever feeling preachy. Seth the raccoon’s determination to get better at soccer takes an unexpected turn when he signs up for ballet—and I love that it’s shown as not only fun, but actually helpful for his sport. The writing is lively, the characters are easy to connect with, and the illustrations bring Spruce Hollow to life.

This is a longish story about a raccoon wanting to become a better soccer player on his team. Not every plot point advances the story, but a friend stays the night with him once, he travels to school via a canoe, he and his friends graduate kindergarten and meet their first grade teacher, and he begins to practice ballet every Wednesday over the summer. all the practice makes him a better soccer player.
